Guatemala

Guatemala is one of the few places where you can visit ancient Maya ruins in the city of Tikal. Spend at least a full day, if not two if you can. We stayed at the Jungle Lodge Hotel which is located right outside the gates, within walking distance, to Tikal National Park. We spent about 3/4 of the day walking the park and seeing the different ruins. Keep you eyes and ears open as there are many howler monkeys up in the trees throughout the park.

Another city that is a must see is Antigua. Antigua is known for the ruins of colonial churches dating back into the 1600s. There are many old churches and cathedrals still in use today. Make sure you visit Pacaya National Park and hike up Volcan Pacaya. At times you can still see steam coming out of the top. Volcan de Fuego is more active and erupts on a small scale every 20 mins or so. There are a few hikes that take you up to a spectacular view of the volcano, but we were unable to do it due to time. If you happen to be in Antigua around March or April, make sure you see the processions for Semana Santa, which is Holy Week in Guatemala. If you want to learn how to cook authentic Guatemalan food, I highly recommend La Tortilla Cooking School. Depending on how busy it is, you may even get a chance at one on one teaching…
