Germany is another country steeped deep with culture, history, great food, and beer. Most of our time was spent in Munich and the outskirts. We went in mid October, which was a perfect time of year. I was not hot nor was it cold yet. The leaves had already begun to change color. We only had a few days in Germany, and we stayed at a hotel across from the main train station: Munich Hauptbahnhof. It is a pretty central location that made it easy for walking and finding local tours. Our tour to Neuschwanstein Castle, located in Bavaria, was about an hour and half ride, but we stopped at Schloss Linderhof for a quick tour. Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludwig II in the late 19th century. Rumor has it that it was used as inspiration by Disney for Sleeping Beauty’s fairy tale palace. We spent about half the day at the castle, but with the ride there and back, plan on it being a full day.
Oktoberfest is a popular time in Munich, with an estimated 6.3 million visitors. Unless you prefer extremely large crowds, I would recommend going another time to enjoy Hofbrauhaus and other breweries that supply the beer for Oktoberfest without the hassle.
