Malta

Have you ever wanted to go to one of those little countries in Europe where the streets are so narrow most of them are one way, and the local cuisine menus are planned around the local catch of the day? Malta is that place! It is like no other. It has so much history and culture packed into this little island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. With travel time to and from the United States, we had about five days there, which allowed us to see quite a bit. Here is one of our videos on YouTube: Malta.

Once we landed in Malta, we picked up our rental car from Enterprise which was right there at the airport in an attached parking garage. In Malta, they drive on the left hand side of the road. This was my first time driving on the left hand side. It took a little while to adjust but after a bit you will get the hang of it, don’t worry. They use a lot of traffic circles instead of traffic lights and intersections. It will probably take you a few tries to get use to the flow of traffic and exiting the circle. Usually the left lane exits the first or second exit out of the circle while the most right lane exits the third exit or to turn around and go back the way you came. Keep an eye out for one way streets and ‘Do Not Enter’ signs in the city areas, as they use cameras and you may get a ticket.

Our first night we stayed the Hilton Malta, which had an amazing view looking over the pool and ocean. The location was really nice, as it was a 10-15 minute walk to harbor area with many shops and restaurants.

During WWII, Malta was one of the headquarters for the Allies during their attack on Sicily. Make sure you visit the Lascaris War Rooms. It’s like taking a step back in time to 1943 during Operation Husky.
